Explaining their stand, Charan Singh Sapra, President of Punjabi Cultural And Heritage Board informed a tabloid, “We are objecting on the grounds that Saif is shown with a very trim beard. Sardars don’t wear this look. While Imtiaz represented the sardars in Jab We Met very well, why has he not done the same in Love Aaj Kal? We have sent a memorandum regarding this to Saif, Imtiaz Ali and Dinesh Vijan (co-producer of Love Aaj Kal).”
“We have also written to the Censor Board not to pass the film until the rectification has been made. Otherwise, the Censor Board will be responsible for the ire of the Sikh community,” he said.
But Saif is confident that he hasn't portrayed sardars in wrong light.
Saif said, “To begin with, there is nothing to be offended about. In fact, when they see the film, they will be very proud of the way sardars have been depicted. This is the most authentic and romantic sardar ever.”
Saif added, “No one has seen the film yet and so we have decided to show them the film in a couple of days. I am sure once that is done, there will be no problem at all. I understand that in our country we have to keep everyone’s cultural sensitivity in mind and not do anything to upset any community. They just want to be represented well and that is exactly what we have done. There will be no question of reshooting.”
Despite working with big banners, her recent releases failed to have any impact at the box-office. Now it looks like only God can bring back the magic of Rani, the Bollywood actress who was once ruling the industry.
Rani has been on fast for the past three months and she will be observing it every Thursday for 40 weeks. A special puja was performed by a group of eight priests at the Sai Baba temple in Shirdi, Pune.
"It's a four hour-long puja, which begins with morning abhishek. A total of 108 prayers are offered in this puja. The last step is the maha aarti, in which Sai Baba is offered food and sweets, which is then distributed among the devotees," a pundit was quoted by a national daily as saying.
Our Bong girl, Rani is donating clothes for the pundits and bearing all expenditures for the prasad and the puja samagiri.
"An actor's body needs agility to carry off the action or stunt sequence convincingly. The body needs to be in optimum form. I trained to develop it before the film went on floors," Dia, whose character has shades of grey in the movie, told reporters here, unveiling the film's 'first look.'
"Besides, it's good to be bad," she said adding hers is the only female character in the film which stars Danny, Fardeen Khan, Irrfan Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Manoj Bajpayee and Dino Morea.
The film directed by Supran Verma and produced by Sanjay Gupta of White Feather Films will release worldwide on September 3.
Fardeen said he earlier worked with Supran in 'Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena' also produced by Sanjay Gupta.
The multiple Oscar winning film which took in 32 million pounds on the box office emerged on top of a list of 2009 superhits compiled by the Cinema Advertising Association, reported Mirror online.
Cinemas in the country are enjoying a seven-year high in ticket sales during the recession and the feel-good entertainer directed by Danny Boyle scored well with the audiences.
"It's terrific to see the success of the film continuing throughout 2009. Even when money is tight, it seems we are still dedicated to cinema," said Anna Cremin, CAA spokesperson.
Other big hits include sci-fi blockbuster, 'Monsters Vs Aliens, 'Star Trek' and the latest 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' which took in 4.7 million pounds on its opening night last week.
Project Shiksha is anational consumer program which allows consumers to participate in a national effort to support the education of underprivileged children in India via simple brand choices.
A source close to the development says: "Saif Ali Khan has lent his full support to Shiksha. When people buy the product he endorses, a part of that amount will be given to Shiksha. Saif is playing a very important role in creating awareness among the underprivileged because he feels education is a must for all."
Saif says, "Shiksha is now in its 5th year. As India makes economic progress, it is important that we, who have benefited from education, ensure that all children enjoy the same privileges. Education is the single most critical investment needed to sustain economic growth and build a healthy society. I support Shiksha by volunteering time and helping raise awareness. I urge people across India to speak and act for our children."
